In addition to using fingerprint classification for criminal files, they are also used in the identification of other persons.
Fingerprints used to be manually searched, one million fingerprint cards on file would take about 65 years to complete. The automated technology used by the Pennsylvania state Police today, (A.F.I.S.) can accomplish the same task in about 30 minutes.  

The Records and Identification Division of the State Police is responsible for the classification and filing of fingerprint records from all state police and municipal departments in Pennsylvania.
