Through this web site, and in particular, this newsletter, we will keep you informed about the Pennsylvania State Police Historical, Educational and Memorial Center.

A recent news story reports retired Lt. Henry E. Poiser, 97, is the “oldest living state police officer in Pennsylvania,” and it also mentioned that he had participated in a oral history interview recounting his 35 years of service.  He primarily was assigned to Troop B with his last posting as the Commanding Officer of the Uniontown barracks.    The interview was conducted by retired Cpl. Bob Mertz, a volunteer interviewer with the Pennsylvania State Police Historical, Educational and Memorial Center, (HEMC).  Bob reports that he had worked with Henry when both were on active duty.  This helped in the interview process and generally made things go smoother.  “You could tell he really liked the job, he really is proud to have been a Pennsylvania State Trooper.  I was amazed at his memory, he could recall the smallest details.  His stamina was also surprising, we generally do a pre-interview to set a road map for the final interview.  Henry was so enthused  he wanted to continue on without a break.”.  Bob has been a interviewer for about three years, and was in the first group trained.  He has conducted nine interviews for the oral history project to date.

Kim Cady, Development Coordinator for HEMC, reports that over forty recordings are now in the historical library which has been made possible thru a grant awarded by the Pennsylvania Historical Museum Commission, (PHMC), and thru matching funds by the Centennial Committee.

Kim explains “... candidates for the oral history program are referred to HEMC thru various ways; including in person, by family members, letters, and other information sources.”  Presently retired Capt. Rufus Williams is scheduled to be interviewed, and retired Cpl. Bob Gerken, another volunteer, will interview two retirees while traveling to Florida.  Generally the taping’s last about two hours, however one interview in the collection runs nine hours.

Presently the history project is working with the older retirees, but in certain instances a more recently retired member may be interviewed, as in the case of retired Maj. Lyle Szupinka, who served from 1968-2005.  He was interviewed  based on his work in the Flight 93 crash at Shanksville.

Bob Mertz commented that “To do a good job of recording our history you need a working knowledge of State Police history and be a good listener.” (view training info)
Information for item in part was from the news story in the Uniontown Herald Standard.
