Preident Harry S. Truman, with his wife Bess |
In the PSP-HEMC January 2008 Newsletter we reported the efforts of Matthew Algeo, a
writer, whose gathering information about a road trip taken in the 1950's by former
President Harry S. Truman, and his wife Bess. He is writing a book about this trip, and
had information regarding the former President being stopped by a Pennsylvania State
Trooper for a traffic violation. Algeo has developed the facts about this incident. We
update our earlier item with a July 1953 news story. Former President Harry S.
Truman, traveling through Pennsylvania on his way home to Missouri, got a lecture on good
driving yesterday from a State Trooper. About two miles east of Everett, on the
Pennsylvania Turnpike, Private Manley Stampler, of the Pennsylvania State Police, stopped
the former President after he made an improper pass. According to the news item Stampler
said He (Truman) was going towards Pittsburgh and doing about 50 mph........when I
started to pass him. Mr. Truman pulled in front of the State Police car forcing
Stampler to slow down. I followed him to see what the score was. I didnt know
I was following the former President.....I pulled alongside of him and thought I
recognized him. I waved at him to pull off the right of way. I told him what he had done
wrong, and he said he didnt realize it - that it wasnt intentional....I
dont remember his exact words but he said he would be more careful. We shook hands
and parted. Mrs Truman was sitting beside him in the front seat and didnt say
anything. But she smiled and waved to me when they left. The information for this
story is from a July 6, 1953 Pittsburgh Post Gazette news report provided by Matthew
Algeo. Retired State Trooper Manley Stampler lives in Surprise, Arizona, near Phoenix.

assist in conducting oral history interviews of individuals who have experienced or

this basic social competence.
We will train you in how to do background research, how to do
pre-interview research, teach you the techniques of oral history fieldwork, and you will
learn the many other processes required to make you successful at oral history

We will also train and furnish you with the necessary equipment
needed to document the oral history.
All oral history training is provided absolutely free!
