Patrolman
Paul Gorley |
Patrolman Paul Gorley, 95,
enlisted with the Pennsylvania Highway Patrol in 1934. He has many memories of cold nights
patrolling on the Indian Motorcycle, along with a high speed chase using a fellow
patrolmans private vehicle which led to the arrest of fugitive from justice. Paul
served most of his career in Erie Troop. (This 1934 photo is the property of retired Sgt.
Paul Gorley, who now lives in Florida. We thank him for his
contribution.)

Was former President Harry S.
Truman stopped for a traffic offense near Bedford? |
|
|
Research reveals a Pennsylvania State Trooper did
stop the former President in the summer of 1953 but only to shake his hand. The press
erroneously reported a traffic offense had taken place. The President told this story
later to a friend and commented that he and his wife could not go anywhere until the
glamour wears off. We found this information in the book Bess Truman,
published 1986, pg. 401-402, written by their
Daughter, Margaret Truman, who was both a journalist and novelist. |
